Zongo Youth Group Urges Politicians: “Respect Our Communities—Keep Campaigns Clean”
Accra, Ghana — June 2025
A coalition of concerned youth from Ghana’s Zongo communities has issued a strong statement urging Assin Central MP and presidential hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, to refrain from dragging their communities into what they describe as “divisive campaign rhetoric.”
In a press conference held over the weekend, the group condemned recent comments attributed to Mr. Agyapong that allegedly painted Zongo residents in a negative light. According to them, such remarks reinforce harmful stereotypes and threaten the unity and peace within these vibrant, diverse urban communities.
“We are not against any candidate or political party, but we reject any attempt to stigmatize or use Zongo communities as scapegoats for political gain,” the youth group stated.
The group emphasized that Zongo communities across Ghana are hubs of culture, resilience, and entrepreneurship, and should not be reduced to political pawns or targets of inflammatory language. They called on all politicians—regardless of party affiliation—to uphold a standard of respect, unity, and responsible campaigning, especially as Ghana inches closer to the 2025 general elections.
Youth Taking a Stand for Dignity
The group’s intervention reflects a broader trend of politically conscious and civically engaged youth in Ghana, particularly within traditionally marginalized communities. They warned that continued disrespect towards Zongo residents could fuel unnecessary tensions and erode national cohesion.
“We deserve campaigns that speak to our development, education, job creation, and inclusion—not fear, blame, or division,” the group added.
This call comes at a critical time when young people across the country are demanding issue-based politics, inclusive policies, and genuine respect from leaders seeking their vote.
